Kvarner

The Kvarner Region is where the Adriatic Sea meets majestic mountains, offering a perfect blend of coastal charm, serene islands, and rich cultural heritage.

Somewhere between the mountains and crystal clear sea full of islands, at the northern coast of Croatia, stands Kvarner – an area with hospitality tradition longer than 170 years. From the middle of the 19th century, when the hotel Kvarner first began to host guests, the hospitality of Kvarner developed a long tradition. Kvarner is the place where even most demanding visitors can find something for themselves.

Who Built Them?

The 4Islands race follows some amazing trails and paths along the Adriatic coast; trails that have been praised by past riders year upon year.

We have to admit one thing though: we merely adjusted the trails for mountain bikes.

These were all built by trailblazers way, way before us

Starting with the trade roads of the Roman empire all over the Adriatic some 2000 years ago, then by Napoleonic troops who built a road on the island of Lošinj in the 19th century, one on the island of Rab built by the legendary Croatian forestry engineer and mountaineer Ante Premužić almost 90 years ago, and all the small paths criss-crossing the mountains and islands of Croatia that were built by local shepherds, highlanders and traders throughout the long history of these parts.

And then last (but not least) our hardworking staff and volunteers who spend weeks before the race shovelling dirt around to make it more hospitable to mountain bikers instead of, you know, mules and armoured boots.

None of these ancient people even imagined a day when their trails and roads would once in the far future serve as ideal terrain for mountain biking trails of the 4Islands race.

You will have the opportunity to ride these very trails, through vineyards and over rough rocky hills, through pine forests and along coastal roads, into ancient towns and small peaceful villages, from the highest island peaks-which provide an amazing view-all the way down to the beaches where a quick lycra-clad dip is always an option.

The bottom line

We have tried to create something that is a true race for mountain bikers, not just a cycle race that goes off-road. And we believe we succeeded in delivering a full-blooded bone-rattling experience that will push even the gnarliest to their limits!

We’re confident that you tough mountain bikers will love the challenge.

So remember to honour all these people who, for various reasons and through lots of sweat and gruelling back-breaking work, helped to build all these trails throughout the history so that today we can enjoy the amazing scenery of the 4Islands race.
