“In terms of endurance, it's quite different here! It’s been tough - hot days and long distances,” he said after Stage 5. “You really have to suffer to get to the finish.” But with years of mountain bike experience and memories to call upon, Yakubanets knows that the only way to claim that coveted Epic Legends medal is to keep pushing, no matter the conditions.

“The Cape Epic has been fantastic so far,” Yakubanets said, “It is the pinnacle of the Epic Series and it shows, it’s been a tough but great experience.”

According to Yakubanets, his main goal with German partner, Dan Bronstein is to finish without any mishaps. “When I started riding stage races, an Epic Legends medal was not my target, but it’s definitely a significant achievement in the mountain bike racing world and to get one will make me very proud.”

Will he be back in Africa anytime soon? “Well, we’ll have to see!” He jokes. “You know how the Monday after the finish you swear you'll never do it again, then a few days later, you're signing up for another Epic? Let’s see…”
