Alan Hatherly and Simon Andreassen held off Imbuko Giant A in a sprint finish to win the opening stage of the FNB Wines2Whales Shiraz race, on Friday.
The prestige of FNB Wines2Whales ensures that South Africa’s best mountain bikers descend on Hermanus for the Shiraz to race from whales to wines in the Switchback edition. Among the pre-race favourites are previous winners, cross-country campaigners and dark horses for the 2023 title.
E-Bike World Champion, Joris Ryf teamed up with, Specialized Factory Racing manager, Benno Willeit to storm to the 2023 FNB Wines2Whales Pinotage title. The winners were 32 minutes and 4 seconds quicker across the three days than Giniel de Villiers and Bobby Behan, of Toyota Specialized. FuelX’s Wayne van der Walt and Jovan Jacobs rounded out the podium places.
With 210 E-Bike riders taking on the Pinotage race, in the mid-week FNB Wines2Whales, the event boasts the largest ever field of E-Bikers in a South African mountain bike race. This is a boon for the bike industry in the country as nothing drives bike sales like races.
